Funny thing, if Sanchez had played 40-45 years ago, not much would have been made of his Mexican ancestry.

David in TeN: I am a native of Los Angeles. I remember a time of Mexican folks from across the spectrum. The ones who did the grunt work at my fathers smelting plant right up to our county Sheriff. I went to almost lilly-white schools; we had a sprinkling of Mexicans.

In general, they got in a bit more trouble than the other kids, but for the most part they were squared-away, friendly, a lot of fun to be around, and had grade averages only slightly under those of the rest of us.

In short, good, decent people. And lest anyone think "oh, these are the descendants of the white Mexicans from the days before California was in the US:, they'd be wrong. They varied from white to brown as can be.

They thought of themselves as Americans, and the only place you might see a Mexican flag would be at, say, a Cinco de Mayo festival, or on the wall in a Mexican restaurant. There were American flast there as well.
