The National Review long ago lost any credibility it had among conservatives.

If you doubt that, read this paean to Trotsky that ran in its pages almost a decade ago.

But now in addition to promoting the neocon heresy, the NR crowd have fallen victim to political correctness.

That moment came when they canceled John Derbyshire's columns because he ran a piece on the Takimag blog in which he said some politically incorrect things about black people.

There is much I disagree with, such as the admonition "Do not act the Good Samaritan to blacks in apparent distress, e.g., on the highway.”

A couple years ago, I was checking the surf in Deal when a black guy approached me and told me his van was out of gas. I figured he might be some sort of scammer. But no, he turned out to have a pregnant wife in the van. He was an honest, hard-working guy and he was out of gas. So I got him some gas.

I suppose there was some risk he might murder me. But in Deal? That would be a weird place for a minority killer to look for white victims. I liked my odds.

Anyway, my rule is you have to take that sort of thing on a case-by-case basis. But if Darb feels otherwise, then good for him. What bothers me is the sort of test imposed here by the uninteresting Mr. Lowry. He seems to have checked his shelf for a template marked "racism." Then he put the template over the writing. I gather it fit. But he and the rest of the NR crowd are political agitators, not writers. And getting accused of racism detracts from their efforts.

Those efforts have been paltry ever since the George W. Bush era. That Bush was a nonentity and a fraud  should have been obvious to any conservative from the beginning. The NR crowd stuck with him even after he got thousnands of good Americans killed through his absolute incompetence and laziness.

Politics aside, though, I much prefer publications with good writing, where the writers can "dance with arms and legs" as the great H.L. Mencken put it.

Mencken of course has also been accused of all sorts of thought crimes, most of which he was guilty of. If that sort of thing bothers you, feel free to be bothered. but when a guy titles a book of his writing "Prejudices," then you have been forewarned. And when it comes to the National Review, you are forewarned as well.

[Regarding Mulshine’s primary criticism of Derbyshire, the latter has responded by pointing out that his “talk” was intended for kids, who notoriously lack the judgment of a mature man, in being able to make the sort of on-the-spot distinctions that Mulshine did. If you want your child to survive to develop the sort of judgment to know when it appears safe to act the good Samaritan, you’d better warn him to avoid putting himself in such a position.]
