Police in Saginaw are asking parents to keep their children from attending pre-prom events tonight after a 17-year-old was killed and three women injured in a shooting at a gathering before Saginaw High School's prom on Thursday.

Saginaw High School tenth-grader Tonquinisha McKinley died and three women, ages 18, 19 and 39 are recovering after they were shot while watching students take pre-prom pictures, Saginaw Police Sgt. Reginald Williams II said today.

Tonquinisha was not attending prom but was with a group taking pictures prior to the celebration, Williams said.

"Arthur Hill (High School) will be hosting their prom tonight," Williams said in statement , referring to another of Saginaw Public Schools' three high schools. "We are asking that parents encourage their children to not participate in pre-prom gatherings. These gatherings have proven to be unsafe in the past."

Investigators say an argument broke out and shots were fired at 6:08 p.min the parking lot of the Florence Event Hall on Salt Street) in the city, according to a Saginaw Police release.

Williams said that law enforcement officials held assemblies at local high schools last week warning students not to hold unofficial pre-prom gatherings. Police have had to respond to issues at the sites the past couple of years.

"We warned them not to gather, tried to give them the do's and the don'ts of prom," Williams said. "And unfortunately they didn't heed what we were saying. And every year – not a shooting – but every year we have an incident because of the gathering."

Michigan State Police investigators are assisting the Saginaw Police.

The school's prom at a banquet center in Saginaw County's Thomas Township went on Thursday night following the shooting.

Anyone with information about this incident should call the Saginaw-area Crime Stoppers office at 1-800-422-JAIL (5245).
