Thanks to reader-researcher “W” for this article.

The writer failed to note that Theodore Wafer was sentenced to suffering racist black gang-rape, sexual slavery, and either being beaten to death, or dying from AIDS.

DETROIT (AP) — A suburban Detroit man was sentenced Wednesday to at least 17 years in prison for killing an unarmed woman who appeared on his porch before dawn.

Theodore Wafer was convicted of second-degree murder in the Nov. 2 death of 19-year-old Renisha McBride. Before he was sentenced, the Dearborn Heights man apologized to her family, saying he killed a woman who was "too young to leave this world."

"I will carry that guilt and sorrow forever," said Wafer, often pausing to control his emotions.

Wafer was convicted last month after a nine-day trial that centered on whether the 55-year-old had a reasonable and honest belief that he was in peril. He testified that he was awakened by pounding on his doors and shot McBride because he feared for his life. A jury rejected his claim of self-defense.

Prosecutors recommended at least 17 years in prison for Wafer, the low end of the guidelines, including two years for unlawful use of a gun. Defense attorney Cheryl Carpenter asked for as few as six years in prison.

Noting Wafer's age, Carpenter told Judge Dana Hathaway that anything more than 10 years in prison would be a "life sentence." Wafer, who played football at Northern Michigan University in the 1970s, has health problems after a career as a laborer, including outdoor maintenance at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Carpenter said. The judge declined to go below the guidelines.

No one knows why McBride ended up at Wafer's home about 4:30 a.m., though prosecutors speculated she may have been seeking help. She had crashed her car into a parked car about a half-mile away in Detroit around 1 a.m. An autopsy found she was extremely drunk.

Wafer opened the front door and shot McBride in the face, firing through a screen door. He first suggested to police that it was an accident but later admitted to intentionally pulling the trigger.

In Michigan, victims can speak in court before a sentence is ordered. McBride's sister, Jasmine McBride, criticized Wafer for his "cowardly actions."

The judge said McBride had made "some terrible choices" but that she didn't deserve to be killed.

Hathaway described the case as "one life gone and one life ruined."

The jury convicted Wafer of murder, manslaughter and a gun-related charge on Aug. 7. His maximum sentence is 32 years in prison, although he'll be eligible for parole after serving the minimum of 17.

Wafer is white and McBride was black, and some wondered in the aftermath of the shooting whether race was a factor, likening it to the shooting of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin. But race was hardly mentioned at trial.

But race was hardly mentioned at trial.

How fucking dishonest is that? As if it had to be...

BTW, who was on the jury -- what was the racial makeup?

17 years seems absurdly heavy to me. He should have been convicted of nothing more than involuntary manslaughter -- ie he just (wrongly) reacted, he had no 'malice aforethought'. Per this link, the base sentence for that is 10 to 16 months, but it can be increased based on the circumstances.

A shocking verdict and a shocking sentence (as well as a very unfortunate incident, to say the least). But not surprising. Of course race played no role -- I know because an AP reporter said so.

3rd degree murder sounds more reasonable. Reckless misconduct. It was not an event as a reaction to hate but rather fear.

Go and look up the Ossian Sweet Case. From many decades ago in Detroit.

Black doctor [Sweet] with eight other men in a darkened and empty house, those men equipped with a dozen or so firearms, when confronted by a mob, firing on the mob, killing one man, that man shot in the back.

Sweet acquitted.

This is why whites should try to get on juries rather than trying to avoid them. You WANT to get on cases involving guns because you NEED TO BE THE MONKEY WRENCH IN THE COSMOPOLITANS ANTI-SELF-DEFENSE MACHINE.

Holding people blameless when dealing with BLACK mayhem is the key to telling the Marxist gun controllers to go fish.

Everything is pro black now...why? I have no idea. The homeowner didn t ask for this situation in the am hours...who knows what anyone would do in that situation. The man was protecting his house from an unknown person.

I guess the legal standard would be, unless that woman was actually knocking down the door and attempting to enter the home, the man should not have fired.

You panic in those early morning hours situations. Evidently this man did so.
